Meaning: If someone is head over heels in love, it means that they love someone very much (they are deeply in love).

Example: Sam and Annie fall head over heels in love at the top of the Empire State building on Valentines day. (In the film Sleepless in Seattle)

secret admirer.png

Meaning: A secret admirer is someone that likes someone else romantically but does not disclose their identity (they do not tell the person how they feel).

Example: Georgina had a secret admirer who used to send her red roses.

set up.png

Meaning: If two people are set up on a date, it means that someone else has organised the meeting for them. This is usually a friend that wants them to start a relationship.

Example: Michael Lewis and his wife were set up on a blind dinner date.

get together.png

Meaning: If two people get together, it means that they have sex/ start a relationship.

Example: Sam and Peter got together on New Year’s Eve

Meaning: When someone sees someone else and feels that they love that person immediately.

Example: Richard Branson said that it was love at first sight when he met his wife Joan.

Meaning: If someone is love sick, it means that they are not acting normally because they love someone so much. This usually happens at the beginning of a relationship and might mean that someone has lost their appetite (does not eat much).

Example: Jeremy was so lovesick and stayed at home waiting for her to call.

Meaning: If someone is besotted with someone, it means that they love them so much and think about them all the time.

Example: Jennifer is besotted with her new guy and never stops talking about him!

Meaning: If someone asks someone else out, it means that they ask them to do something together (e.g go for a drink/cinema etc) with the hope that they will start a romantic relationship.

Example: George was so happy when Fiona asked him out.

Meaning: If someone flirts with someone, they say or do things that show that they are attracted to that person.

Example: Vanessa had fun flirting with her new colleague during their coffee break.

Meaning: If someone chases someone else, they try and persuade them to have a romantic or sexual relationship with them.

Example: Tom chased Hannah for months until she finally agreed to go for a drink with him.

Meaning: If someone is after someone else, it means that they like them a lot and want to start a relationship with them (a bit like the word ‘chase’ above).

Example: He’s been after her for months, I wish he would just ask her out.

Meaning: If someone has the hots for someone, it means that they are sexually attracted to them

Example: Tania had a huge crush on her maths teacher and always looked forward to seeing him.

Meaning: If two people hit it off, it means that they like each other and usually have a lot in common and a lot to talk about. It could just refer to two friends but is often used when two people start a romantic relationship.

Example: Martin Freeman said that he and his ex-wife, Amanda, hit it off straight away.

Meaning: A whirlwind romance is a romantic relationship that happens very quickly and progresses quickly

Example: His parents said that they had a whirlwind romance and got married a month after meeting each other.

Meaning: Cupid is the god of love and desire in classical mythology. An arrow is a long metal weapon that he fires from his bow. It is said that if you are struck (hit) by Cupid’s arrow, you fall in love

Example: We fell in love straight away - it was as if I had been struck by Cupid’s arrow!

Meaning: If someone is treated, it means that they receive presents or/and someone has behaved in a very nice way towards them.

Example: My husband really treated me this Valentines Day.

Note: You can treat someone to something e.g a nice meal in a restaurant. Or you can be treated.

chat up.png

Meaning: If someone chats someone else up, it means that they ask them questions with the hope/ intention of starting a romantic or sexual relationship

Example: Keven is always chatting up girls.
